Need toilet paper? Pony Club to the rescue

Samford folk are well known for helping each other out, so when a bloke needs a roll of toilet paper, they come to the rescue in hilarious fashion.

Cue lively music, saddle up the horses … and action! It’s the perfect storyline for a Youtube sensation.

That’s just what Samford Golden Valley Pony Club president Peter Tornabene thought, when he had the idea to put together a tongue-in-cheek video.

He was also hoping it would boost the spirits of members missing fortnightly musters and their club mates.

Hollywood’s on standby …

The video starts with Peter asking if anyone has a roll of toilet paper and then cuts to a club member who says she has one. She then throws it off-screen where it is caught by children on a ride-on mower, who throw it to a boy pushing a wheelbarrow … and so it goes on.

The roll of toilet paper is tossed all over the place between club members and businesses who have supported the club over the years, with a cameo from Moreton Bay Regional Councillor Darren Grimwade (Div 11).

“It was something silly. We only did it keep the club entertained and let people know there’s still something happening,” Peter says.

“It was a little bit of a mission at first, trying to explain to everyone what I was trying to do. They looked at me weirdly … I had to say to them just trust me on this. They had fun and have seen it and think it’s absolutely brilliant.”

It took about two weeks to film and put together.

While it was definitely a bit of fun, it was also a ploy to get members in their uniforms and on their horses, so they still felt like they were part of a pony club.

As for his starring role … he laughs when asked if he had to audition for it.

“That was one of (vice-president) Kathryn Fuhrmann’s touches. She came up with the idea – the club president needing a roll of toilet paper and members and the community helping each other out to get it,” he explains.

Back in the saddle?

Peter hopes the club might be able to resume some of their activities from June 14 as part of the stage two of the easing of restrictions. They may split into morning and afternoon groups to manage numbers, but are awaiting advice before making final decisions.

“Normal pony club competitions are a long way off,” he says.

In the meantime, the club has launched its own Youtube channel with instructional videos and of course, the toilet paper challenge video.

Samford Golden Valley Pony Club has about 100 members and would usually have musters on the second and fourth Sunday of the month.

It recently received a grant for new cross-country jumps and Peter can’t wait for members to try them out.
