$10m upgrade for key roads

An intersection in one of Moreton Bay region’s fastest growing areas is to have a $10 million upgrade.

The Federal Government has announced funding for the intersection of Young Rd, Oakey Flat Rd and Sovereign Dr, in Narangba.

When complete it will be a multi-lane four-arm traffic signal intersection with separated left and right lanes on each approach.

There will also be dedicated pedestrian crossings and on-road bicycle lanes.

Funding is from the Stream 2 of the Housing Support Program, for infrastructure projects to ease congestion in areas with new housing developments.

"Better places"

Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government, Catherine King said the aim is to make “our regions even better places to live”.

“It’s the places where people not only gather or play sport, but learn to participate in teamwork, to collaborate, and it's critical to social cohesion,” the Minister said.

The detailed design has been funded by almost $2 million from Moreton Bay City Council which will deliver the project.

“Significant housing developments at Narangba Heights and Kinma Valley, means that this area will experience an increase in traffic,” Mayor Peter Flannery said.

“The Narangba Heights and Kinma Valley development sites will deliver over 3200 future housing lots that will address much-needed housing supply in our City.

“It’s pleasing to finally see the penny drop that Councils cannot develop land for housing without proper infrastructure.”

"Safer access"

Councillor Darren Grimwade (Div 11) said: “It will not only improve vehicle access via Oakey Flat Rd, but also ensure better and safer access to Narangba train station.

“With schools including Carmichael College, Narangba Valley State School and Narangba Valley State High School within 2km radius of this project, the upgraded road will also reduce congestion and improve safety for active travel.”

Council will provide more information on the design to nearby residents and road users in the coming months.

Construction will begin in late 2025 and be completed in 2026.
