Bribie Bridge II: Next step

The next important step in the plan for a new Bribie Island Bridge is about to start, with technical investigations on and around Bribie’s bridge beginning mid-November.

State Member for Pumicestone Ali King says these investigations are critical in developing a business case for a new bridge.

“Our Palaszczuk Labor Government has allocated $4 million towards a business case for our next Bribie Island Bridge, as part of our bigger plan to progressively dual lane Bribie Island Road,” Ms King says.

“A new bridge will improve safety, reliability and connectivity for drivers, pedestrians and bike riders alike.

“Detailed assessments of the existing bridge and geotechnical investigations in Pumicestone Passage will shape the design for a new bridge and help us understand the future of the existing bridge.

“Work will be happening both on the bridge and in the Pumicestone Passage over the coming months, so I’m asking local drivers to stay alert to changing traffic conditions.”

Community consultation will open soon, asking residents, businesses and visitors about their vision for a new bridge to the island and the future of the existing bridge.

"The results of the assessment will be essential to understanding the bridge’s current condition and remaining life," Ms King says.

"Investigations will be done at night when traffic volumes are lower so the disruption to drivers can be minimised.

"Crews will also examine the sub-structure of the existing bridge from on-water barges and platforms.

"From early 2023, crews will also start geotechnical drilling to assess the subsurface conditions in the area where a new bridge could be constructed.

"A drilling rig operating from a barge will be working across Pumicestone Passage during the day collecting soil samples from under the seabed to the north of the existing bridge.”

Ms King is encouraging locals to stay engaged with the project.

“I know how important this planning is for the future of our community,” she says.

All technical investigations are undertaken under an Environmental Management Plan.
