Cash boost for cancer research

Having been diagnosed with prostate cancer themselves, the men from the Moreton Bay Regional Prostate Cancer Support Group know all too well the challenges that come with hearing those words and the grueling treatment that follows.

That’s why they are on a mission to help eradicate the disease and save the lives of other blokes by making a generous donation to help fund vital research and treatments.

President Peter Ham and his good mate John Dowling presented a cheque for $3000 to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital (RBWH) during the Network ’23 Conference for south-east Queensland Prostate Cancer Support Groups at Kedron-Wavell Services Club on Wednesday, March 22.

Dr Matthew Roberts, who is a Consultant Urologist at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital and Group Leader and Senior Lecturer for The University of Queensland Centre for Clinical Research, was the guest speaker at Wednesday’s conference and accepted the cheque on behalf of the hospital.

Following the conference, Peter told Moreton Daily he was pleased the group could make such a sizeable donation.

“The money that we donated was raised from our annual fun run last year,” Peter said.

“The fun run is such a major event for us because it brings in a lot of donations from the community.

“We really hope this money will go towards research, because the research Dr Roberts is doing is so important.”

This was the first time the Moreton Bay Group has hosted the annual conference, which was attended by prostate cancer support groups from Gympie, the Sunshine Coast, Gold Coast and Toowoomba, with more than 30 people in attendance.

The event was also attended by representatives from Genesis Care and the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia, who also spoke on the day.
