Central works depot in the pipeline

The Deception Bay Moreton Bay Regional Council depot will become an SES depot under a plan to consolidate the region’s three works depots.

The consolidation will create one central facility to help reduce maintenance and operational costs.

Construction will start this month on the $34.3 million-dollar works depot, intersection and road upgrade at Boundary Rd, Narangba, with Council today awarding the contract to ADCO Constructions.

Mayor Peter Flannery says the move will help meet the current and future needs of Council staff and the region, and improve response times to requests with a major works depot in the heart of the region.

“In less than 15 years, this region will have a greater population than Tasmania, and a greater demand for essential services,” Mayor Flannery says.

Preparing for growth

“To prepare for this growth we are consolidating our three old works depots at Petrie, Burpengary and Deception Bay into one centralised facility in Narangba.”

Part of the upgrade will include a new intersection to provide safe entry and exit points into the depot, as well as rehabilitating about 950m of Boundary Rd to improve the surface ahead of the facility’s expected opening in mid-2023.

“While we need to spend now to make this change, the long-term savings for the community and Council will be significant,” Mayor Flannery says.

“More than 320 staff will operate from this new facility, which will include greater storage, a fleet workshop and staff amenities for our asset maintenance crew.

“From upkeeping parks, to fixing potholes and cracked footpaths, and providing weed management, this team is out every day in every corner of the region.”

Mayor Flannery says the new facility will deliver a modern and sustainable space to create a safe and more productive working environment for staff.
