Council to honour fallen officers

Council buildings throughout the Moreton Bay Region will be lit up in blue from tonight in memory of the two police officers that were killed in the line of duty.

In a Facebook post, Council said “in commemoration of the two brave young officers who lost their lives in the line of duty at Wieambilla yesterday, we will be lighting the night blue in Moreton Bay.

“We offer our deepest condolences to their loved ones during this time.

“Thank you to all the brave Queensland Police Service officers who put their lives on the line every day to keep us all safe.”

The buildings will remain lit up every night this week until Sunday, December 18.

Mayor Peter Flannery said he hoped people would use this time of mourning to reflect on how the work of police keep us safe every day.

“The shock of the horrific events out in Wieambilla is reverberating right around Australia and is acutely felt here in Moreton Bay, after the hit-and-run death Senior Constable David Masters in Burpengary last year,” he said.

“These brave young officers lost their lives in the line of duty, keeping us as Queenslanders safe, so it’s right that we all stand together in commemorating their lives and service.

“Lighting our buildings blue this week is a small way Council can do that.

“I really hope locals take the time this week to reflect on the work of police.

“Every day the men and women of the QPS put themselves at risk to keep us safe, often leaving families behind at home.

“So please also reflect on the families that support the QPS in their work because that daily anxiety will understandably be amplified right now, worrying if their loved ones will come home safe.

“We are indebted every day to the Queensland Police Service for the incredible work they do.

“The reason we feel safe at home at night, driving on our roads and why we are comfortable walking through local streets and parks is because the QPS is there to protect us.”
