Fish and chips shop set to close

The Great British Fryer fish and chips shop at North Lakes says “with the heaviest of hearts”, it is likely to close after this weekend.

A "new look” and “relaunch” were planned, but discussions over a new lease at 1650 Anzac Ave have “stumbled” and the current plan is to turn off the fryers after trading on Sunday.

The statement on the shop’s Facebook page, says the owners are “unsure” if agreement for a new lease will be reached and they are also looking for new premises.

Final time

“After three years being a part of your community, building relationships and serving you with what we believe to be the highest quality fish and chips, it looks as if we are forced to close our doors for a final time,” say owners Gav and Ali.

“Some of you may have known, we were actively engaged in giving the store a brand new fresh new look, bringing in new product lines and offerings and expanding our business with a “re-launch” due in only a month or two.

“Unfortunately, our verbal agreement and new lease discussions with the landlord have stumbled, and a renegotiation has yet to be reached.

“As it stands, we are unsure if an agreement will be reached and our temporary agreed lease is reaching the very end.”

New location

Many customers expressed shock in comments on the Facebook announcements with several calling on the business to relocate to such as Burpengary, Dakabin and Banyo.

The owners say they are “actively looking” for a new location and will keep customers updated on a new lease or new premises.

At the time of writing, the fish and chip shop plans to open Friday, Saturday and Sunday (March 26-28).
