Have your say on art for hospital expansion

As part of the Redcliffe Hospital Expansion project, the community is being asked to have their say on how ‘arts in health initiatives’ can be integrated throughout the new Clinical Services Building.

Redcliffe Hospital Executive Director Cang Dang explains: “The Arts in Health program, through our (online) survey, will see our community steer the direction of the artwork in our new Redcliffe Hospital, ensuring that we provide a warm environment that resonates with our patients and visitors when in our care”.

The goal is to understand the impact that art can have on someone’s health journey. Art will come from a range of areas with local artists at Artel, through CPL – Choice, Passion, Life, invited to submit EOIs to tender for artwork opportunities.

CPL consumer and Artel artist Slavjanka Stoilkovski is just one of the many local creatives who knows the power of art in health.

She continues to recover from a stroke, channelling her energy into her art at Redcliffe’s Artel Art Studio, which provides a space for artists with disability to create using print, paint, ink and textile design.

“My life experiences have shaped my art in a big way. I didn’t get to do much art before joining Artel, but things have really changed since then,” Slavjanka explains.

“Life isn’t as easy as it used to be, but I’ve had time to practise and get better at my art. I find inspiration in colours, designs and how I’m feeling. My mood on the day often shapes what I create.

“Art can really make a difference for people in hospitals. It can brighten their day and give them something positive to focus on. Art helps people feel calm and gives them a way to take their mind off what’s happening around them.”

Cang says when art and healthcare intersect, patients have “more positive experiences and imagine a more hopeful future”.

“We encourage members of our community to take our brief survey on what type of art they would like to see in our new hospital, so we can ensure we have a diverse and vibrant visual experience to connect with all people who access our services.”

The survey closes on November 28, 2025.
