Have your say on innovation precinct
Residents can have their say on the future of Narangba Innovation Precinct as public consultation opens today.
Consultation starts from today to August 24 for Moreton Bay City Council’s proposed Major Planning Scheme Amendment No. 5 - Narangba Innovation Precinct (East).
The proposed amendment would help create nearly 600 new Special and High-Impact Industry jobs and boost the local economy by $129 million.
Council says it will also build on environmental protections and safeguard surrounding areas.
The existing Temporary Local Planning Instrument (TLPI) over the Narangba Innovation Precinct, on the eastern side of the Bruce Highway, has also been extended for 12 months.
This is to allow the interim planning rules for Special and High Impact Industry to continue while Council finalises public consultation and the amendment process.
“Narangba Innovation Precinct has been an important economic hub for City of Moreton Bay since the 1970s,” Mayor Peter Flannery says.
“Today it provides more than 3000 local Special and High Impact Industry jobs that can’t be located anywhere else in our City.
“It’s important we support the economic viability of these businesses and allow them to expand within a designated section of the precinct, so residents have more options to work close to home as our city grows.”
Cr Sandra Ruck (Div 5) said studies confirmed the precinct could” more actively support Special and High Impact Industry uses with the right conditions in place”.
“Under our proposed amendment, future development would be assessed using a whole-of- precinct approach, meaning potential impacts would be considered together with existing emissions from the entire precinct and not in isolation,” she said.
“They would need to prove there will be no adverse impacts on the surrounding areas, and the whole precinct would continue to be one of the most heavily regulated industrial areas in Queensland to ensure the safety and amenity of nearby residents.”
Councillor Jodie Shipway (Div 4) encouraged residents to review the proposed planning scheme amendment and supporting Planning Scheme Policy – Air Quality Impact Assessment between July 27-August 24.
“This new planning scheme policy will further support air quality assessments and can be reviewed by the public at the same time as the planning scheme amendment,” she said.
