Host a hound like Snickers

A Moreton Bay family which fostered Snickers is urging others to join them and support April’s National Greyhound Adoption Month.

David and Avalon Cairns, from Kallangur, say everyone should give greyhound fostering a go and consider hosting the gentle breed.

Avalon followed several greyhound-related social media pages as she and her husband already had a greyhound named Sky.

She saw a Greyhound Adoption Program (GAP) social media post about the Hound for the Holidays Christmas initiative in late 2025 and thought it was time to find Sky a buddy.

“I always recommend programmes like this and fostering as well, especially because you can get a feel for whether they’re right fit for your family and your situation,” she said.

“At the end of the day, I believe that all greyhounds deserve homes.”

The couple decided to introduce another pet on a trial basis to make sure the new arrival fitted with Sky and their family dynamic.

“We just wanted to make sure it didn’t interrupt her life too much and she’d be ok with it,” Avalon said.

Coming from the GAP kennel, Snickers had to adapt to being a house pet learning to walk up and down stairs, but with Sky as his guide, Snickers adapted quickly.

“It’s nice to see him getting so much more confidence, they (GAP) thought having a more confident dog like Sky around was going to help him,” Avalon said.

Lisa Kohler, GAP Rehoming Manager, said fostering in Host a Hound for National Greyhound Adoption Month gives greyhounds more than just a short-term home.

“Opening your home to a greyhound helps them transition smoothly from racing life into a family environment, giving them a headstart with settling into their forever homes,” she said.

“These gentle, affectionate dogs get to experience family life, while foster carers enjoy an incredibly rewarding experience. It’s a chance to make a real difference in a greyhound’s life, even for a short period.”

The GAP adoption fee is just $100 and necessary supplies are provided, including food, bedding, collar, lead and veterinary care throughout the fostering period.
