Seven-storey plans for corner block

Proposals have been lodged for a community housing development which will bring 144 new units to Moreton Bay.

The development application, submitted to Moreton Bay City Council, is for two seven-storey buildings on the corner of School Rd and Goodfellows Rd, Kallangur.

If approved it will be built on 3521sqm at 1 and 7 Goodfellows Rd, Kallangur and have 66 parking spaces.

Bric Housing will own and manage the tenancies - for studio, one, two, and three-bedroom apartments - and provide onsite services for residents.

“This is a good location for this type of development, with walkable access to local amenities and services, all within a 400-metre radius,” Bric Housing CEO Jane West said.

“It also comes at a critical time in the housing supply crisis, when the need for quality, affordable housing has never been more urgent.

“The proposal is about delivering more homes for people locked out of the housing market despite working, contributing and wanting to stay connected to their community.”

Moreton Bay has one of Queensland’s highest levels of housing-need, with more than 6000 people on the social housing list and rental supply of just 0.7 per cent – below the state average of 0.9 per cent.

Ms West said the project will provide secure, long-term tenancies for local workers, elderly women and veterans, single parents, couples and small families who live or work in the area.

“Importantly, the site’s proximity to local shops, schools, transport and services will reduce reliance on motor vehicles, which was an important consideration in the design.”

Mayor Peter Flannery said: “Our City is experiencing one of the most pressing housing and homelessness challenges in Queensland.

“We need an urgent increase in social and affordable housing to provide safe and secure homes for those in need.

“We thank Bric Housing for putting forward a proposal for a substantial community housing complex at Kallangur, which will now be assessed against Council’s planning scheme.”
