Liam's fight for world rankings
Griffin boxer Liam Wilson is one win away from a top 15 ranking with two of the world’s four major boxing organisations.
The 25-year-old from All Star Boxing Academy in PCYC Pine Rivers, faces Francis Chua at the WIN Entertainment Centre, Wollongong on Wednesday (April 21).
Victory will earn a place in the top 15 super featherweights of the IBF (International Boxing Federation) and WBO (World Boxing Organisation) rankings.
Tough fight
Career records suggest it may be a close fight. Wilson has won all eight of his professional contests, three by knockout. Chua has won eight, lost one and drawn one, two by knockout.
“This will be a tough fight,” said Wilson’s trainer Ben Harrington at the All Star Boxing in Bray Park, “this is a tough kid he’s fighting.
“There are a few adjustments we’ll make, but we always train hard and do the right thing to prepare for every fight.”
Prediction
Chua, from Perth, predicted on Fox Sports that he was going to “bring the best out of Liam Wilson” and “see I can take it”. Wilson’s reply was: “He’ll feel it.”
Wilson started young and had 11 years boxing as an amateur. His record stood at 124 wins from 138 fights – many while at Caboolture Boxing Club.
He also represented Australia reaching the quarter-finals of the 64kg category at the 2018 Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast.
Draw card
Wilson then turned professional after the Games and his stunning knockout of Jesus Cuadro 14 months ago hit the national headlines.
Such is the growing interest in Wilson, his fight with Chua is second on the fight card behind Paul Gallen’s highly-anticipated heavyweight showdown with Lucas Browne.
Wilson’s stablemates at All Star Boxing, bantamweight Vegas Larfield and super featherweight Miles Zalewski are hoping to fight in the next four-six weeks and may then go to Melbourne in July.
