Max blazes golden trail at States

Grace Swimming’s Max Cunningham medalled in all his Year 12 events at the 2021 Queensland Championships last week.

Cunningham and Olivia Smith were selected for the Brisbane Relay team. Max’s team won gold in the freestyle and medley relays while Olivia collected a bronze medal.

The Brisbane Boys relay team also broke a record set in 2009 by three seconds with Max swimming a 26.52 second leg of the 50m freestyle.

Cunningham was also first in the 50m butterfly, 100m butterfly and 50m freestyle events, second in the 200m freestyle and third in the 100m backstroke, 50m backstroke and 100m freestyle.

Ten members of Rothwell-based club qualified for individual events at the week-long championships in Brisbane Aquatic Centre.

They are Ebony Campbell (3 events), Max Cunningham (8), Lauren Dymond (1), Soya Foroush (1), Keenan Martin (1), Elailah Rodd (5), Alia Shaw (5), Lily Smith (5), Olivia Smith (5).

Alia Shaw finished eighth in the state for the 400m freestyle and 12th in the 800m freestyle.

Olivia Smith was also second reserve 12th in the 100m freestyle final.

Unfortunately, Macey Lawler (6) had to withdraw from the championships.
