National award after man saves woman at Woodford

A Kilcoy man is among more than 60 people to be recognised for their courage in the latest round of Australian Bravery Decorations.

Announced by Governor-General David Hurley today, the 39 Decorations were awarded to 66 people.

As part of the announcement, Trevor Richards received a Queensland Commendation for Brave Conduct.

Mr Richards was honoured for pushing a woman out of the path of an out-of-control vehicle at Woodford in 2019.

He was in the office at the Woodford cattle sale yards at 12.30pm on April 22, when a car collided with a truck and careened into the yard towards the office.

Mr Richards quickly left the office and pushed a woman out of the path of the car, taking the full impact himself.

He was thrown into the air and hit by flying debris as the car continued onto the office steps, suffering injuries as a result of his selfless actions.

Courage and selflessness

“Today we recognise and celebrate the bravery of 66 people who put themselves in danger to help others. The courage they showed is matched by their selflessness and they deserve our respect, gratitude and recognition,” Mr Hurley said.

“Each of the stories is striking and inspiring.

“In perilous situations the people we are celebrating chose to try and save others – often at great risk or cost to themselves.

“For the loved ones of those no longer with us – I hope that the posthumous acknowledgement of their bravery brings comfort. Their stories will not be forgotten.”

Mr Richards was also recognised for his courage in November, 2021, when Queensland Police Commissioner Katarina Carroll Certificate awarded him a certificate.
