New $6m walking trail opens
A new 3km walking circuit with lake views, picnic shelters and green areas will open at Moreton Bay Central today.
The $6 million project will provide space for visitors to Moreton Bay Indoor Sports Centre during the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Game.
The upgraded precinct, at the old Petrie Paper Mill site, delivers high-quality waterside spaces and walking trails along the edge of the lakes.
Given the sensitive environmental setting, which is home to an array of wildlife including koalas, possums and birds, dogs will not be allowed in the area.
Mayor Peter Flannery said opening the upgraded precinct, at the old Petrie Paper Mill site, was an exciting step in the countdown to the Olympics.
“The Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games may be six years away, but our residents are already enjoying the lifestyle benefits,” he said.
“The nearby Mill Water Park and Play Space is already hugely popular with families and visitors, and Moreton Bay Central Lakes Walk will complement that.”
Councillor Jim Moloney (Div 8) said: “This is a wonderful community asset that will be enjoyed by locals and visitors for many years to come.”
Moreton Bay Central Lakes Walk has been supported by $3,106,291 from the Australian and State Governments via the SEQ City Deal Liveability Fund. City of Moreton Bay has contributed $2,944,569.
The SEQ City Deal is a partnership between the Australian Government, Queensland Government and Council of Mayors (SEQ).
It aims to deliver projects of long-lasting benefits to South East Queensland, including City of Moreton Bay.
Moreton Bay Central (formerly known as The Mill) is a 460-hectare Priority Development Area (PDA) located in Petrie, anchored by the University of the Sunshine Coast (UniSC) Moreton Bay campus.
