New Bribie Bridge designs unveiled

Concept plans for a second Bribie Island Bridge have been released today, giving residents and visitors a glimpse into the future.

Transport and Main Roads Minister Bart Mellish and State Member for Pumicestone Ali King unveiled the design at the start of public consultation (until March 11).

Graphics show the original 830m bridge will be retained with its two lanes taking traffic off Bribie towards Sandstone Point.

The new bridge, slightly north, will be four metres higher, with two wider lanes and shoulders taking traffic onto Bribie Island.

It will also have a separate “active transport” corridor for use by such as walkers, runners, cyclists and mobility scooters.

Bribie Island Rd will be widened to four lanes from Bestmann Rd East to Benabrow Ave - and Sylvan Beach Esp intersection realigned for safer turns.

Crossing points on the approaches will enable traffic to switch between bridges, if required, for incidents or maintenance works.

There will also be pelican perches overhanging the water on both bridges.

“A detailed assessment found the existing bridge can be used for traffic, which reduces the width of a new bridge and the resulting costs and impacts to build it,” Minister Mellish said on the Bribie foreshore today.

“The new bridge will really improve active transport, which we know is a big issue on the bridge at the moment.

“We want to know what the community thinks about the proposed designs and welcome feedback online, on the newsletter or at drop-in sessions.” (See below)

State Member Ali King said the “significant realignment” of roads onto Bribie would “make sure our traffic flows smoothly.”

“Locals told me they want our iconic bridge protected, better active transport, a safe link in case of incidents which cut the bridge and our wildlife considered,” she said.

“These plans deliver on all those issues.”

City of Moreton Bay Mayor Peter Flannery says there is “critical need for a multi-lane connector to improve safety and reliability for locals and visitors”.

“Bribie Island is also City of Moreton Bay’s most popular destination for tourists, welcoming over 820,000 visitors a year, so this new bridge is vital.

“We welcome the concept designs and see this as a positive step forward in making travel to the island safer, more sustainable, and reliable.”

State Government-owned land on both sides of Pumicestone Passage will be used for the new bridge.

TMR is currently preparing a business case for the new bridge as part of wider upgrades along the Caboolture-Bribie Island Road.
