OMG! Donut chain wins national business award

When Michael Mason went to the markets with his father two years ago, he had no idea it would change his career path.

“I have always worked in hospitality, and at that time I was kind of over having a boss and working for someone else,” he said.

“During one trip to the markets, I saw someone selling donuts and they had a sign up saying they had opportunities within, and I thought I would give it a go on my own.”

Michael is the franchise owner of OMG! Decadent Donuts Moreton Bay, and regularly does pop up stores across the region, as well as attend a variety of community events, including events held by Moreton Bay Region Industry and Tourism (MBRIT).

He started the franchise two years ago and was not deterred by the COVID pandemic.

“I started the business two years ago – August was our second anniversary,” Michael said.

“I do four pop ups a week – Clontarf on Wednesdays, Burpengary every Thursday and Saturday, and on Sundays I’m at Bribie.

“Those are the four main places, but if we do have extra pops, we will tack them on.”

Recognised nationally

Recently, OMG! Decadent Donuts won an Australian Small Business Award in the fast/food takeaway store category.

Diane O’Reilly, who is one of the four directors of OMG! Decadent Donuts, has praised all franchise owners, including Michael, for their commitment to the business.

“These awards are the only national recognition program for Australian small business. There were more than 3500 entries this year,” Diane said.

“The program aims to highlight extraordinary people and acknowledge outstanding Australian small businesses shining a spotlight on high standards of excellence.”

Diane said what makes OMG! Donuts different to other stores and businesses was their high standards of certification.

Each donut is vegan and free of gluten, yeast, dairy, egg, sulphite, nut and wheat.

They are also Vegan Australia Certified and Coeliac Australia accredited.

“OMG! Decadent Donuts have aimed to ensure that as many people as possible can enjoy, even those with dietary requirements due to food allergies, intolerances or cultural ore religious beliefs, as they are also Kosher Australia and Halal Authority of Australia accredited.”

The donuts are dusted in a range of sugars made from locally grown fruits and spices.
