Opportunity knocks for Vegas
Vegas Larfield, the Redcliffe resident who trains at All Star Boxing Academy in Lawnton, is gearing up for a “big opportunity” this month.
The 23-year-old featherweight will climb back into the ring on June 25, in Cairns, to face unbeaten Bryan Cabrillos, from the Philippines.
Cabrillos, a year younger at 22, will bring a professional record of seven wins and one draw into the six-round fight on No Limit Boxing’s show.
Larfield has 12 wins from 13 fights and three from three - with two stoppages and a unanimous points victory - in the last six months.
This fight will be his fourth in seven months, rebuilding momentum after three successive contests were cancelled.
“(Cabrillos) is a dangerous guy,” says Ben Harrington, Larfield’s trainer and founder of All Star Boxing Academy in Pine Rivers Showground.
“It’s a very big opportunity for Vegas to show his skills on national television and probably around the world. It’s as even (a fight) as you can get.
“The guy had amateur boxing experience, same as Vegas. Neither’s at the top of their game yet but are still very evenly matched.
“We know we’re not in for an easy night. The better fighter on the night will win.”
Larfield is on the undercard to All Star stablemate Liam Wilson, who shares top billing with Australian welterweight Liam Paro.
Redcliffe-born Wilson is world ranked four by the WBO and faces Argentinian Ayrton Gimenez for the International Super Lightweight belt.
Victory in the 10-round fight may put Wilson in line for a third world title shot.
