Peninsula power to the double

A commanding performance in difficult conditions gave Peninsula the Warehouse Cricket Association B2N double for 2019-20.

Already minor premiers, Peninsula lost the grand final toss and was put in by Toowong, runners-up in the regular season, on a rain-affected pitch at Marchant Park on Saturday.

But, a patient batting display saw Peninsula to 228 from 106 overs before the bowlers skittled Toowong for 107 on Sunday for a crushing victory on first innings.

Peninsula's Peter Roughton hits out in the B2N final.

Happy captain

“It was hard going,” says Peninsula skipper Doug Sheridan, “it was all about runs, time and overs.

“We would have batted had we won the toss. We wanted to be positive and win, not draw.

“I thought 140-160 would be about par on that pitch …. so I was very happy with 228.

Hayden Garton rock solid in defence

Premier show

“As minor premiers we wanted to win with daylight between the teams. There was on the ladder and I thought there was in the final.”

Peter Roughton top scored with 60 and put on 87 with 16-year-old Hayden Garton (26) for the opening stand. Garton finished the season with 411 runs.

Skipper Sheridan scored a patient 36, Regan Green 33 not out and Andy Dobson 20 as Peninsula ground down Toowong.

A welcome break for the Peninsula batsmen during the grand final

Four wickets

Kyle Millard led the bowling accolades with four wickets for three runs from 10 deliveries to mop up the Toowong tail.

Steve Keefe (2-19), Andy Fredericks (2-29) and Ross Green (2-52 off 20 overs) shared the other wickets and squeezed the run-rate steadily higher.

With the runs and wickets shared it was exactly the all-round team performance Sheridan had called for after the semi-final.
