Peppercorn lease paves the way for Guides good work

Ferny Hills Girl Guides are all set to uphold the Guide Law for another five years thanks to a renewed peppercorn lease from Moreton Bay Regional Council.

Mayor Peter Flannery says the $1 a year lease will help the Guides keep the promise to “do my best, be true to myself, serve my community and Australia, and live by Guide Law”.

He says the lease renewal will ensure the girls can continue their important work around The Hills District.

“As a father myself, I know the importance of mentorship, leadership training and skills development for young girls to thrive,” Mayor Flannery says.

“That’s why Council will only require Guides Queensland to pay a peppercorn lease of $1 each year over the next five years for their clubhouse at Wahminda Park in Ferny Hills.

Mayor Flannery says Council provides hundreds of peppercorn leases to community groups and clubs to ease the financial burden of operating costs.

“This way, the dedicated volunteers at the Ferny Hills Girl Guides can focus their energy on supporting the girls to build new friendships and skills, rather than fundraising to cover their lease,” he says.

Cr Matt Constance (Div 10) says the lease renewal will help the Guides continue to deliver an exceptional service for local girls.

The Ferny Hills Girl Guides have held a lease with Council at the Wahminda Park clubhouse since 1999.

“So, it’s great to have them stay for another five with next to no rental costs on Council facilities.

“With the club supporting girls across Samford, Arana Hills, Ferny Hill and Ferny Grove, this decision is really an investment in our children and our region’s future.”

“I look forward to seeing the club continue to support our young women in conquering their fears, trying new things and growing into the leaders of tomorrow.”

Guides Queensland is a not-for-profit organisation whose mission is to enable girls and young women to grow into confident, self-respecting, responsible community members.
