Plea to ensure motorcylists’ safety
Motorcyclists are in the spotlight across the Moreton Bay Region this week as part of National Road Safety Week.
Moreton Police District Superintendent John Hallam says motorcyclists make up a significant proportion of fatalities and accidents involving serious injuries on our roads, and urges all motorists to take care.
“Riders have just as much right to be on the road as cars,” Supt Hallam says.
“When you’re on the roads, always keep a lookout – and motorcyclists need to ride safely too.”
Shocking road toll
Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey says with Queensland recording 21 more deaths on its roads than the same time last year, every road user has a responsibility to make safe choices.
“The conversation about how you drive and the choices you make on the road should never stop,” Mr Bailey says.
“Sadly, risky behaviours and poor choices contribute to most serious crashes on our roads.”
Mr Bailey says during National Road Safety Week Queensland landmarks will turn yellow to remind people to do the right thing behind the wheel or on a motorbike.
“May they serve as a reminder to slow down on the road, don't drink and drive, leave your phone alone, rest up and belt up before driving. Such simple things that would save so many lives,” Mr Bailey says.
Moreton District Crime Prevention Unit officer in charge Sergeant Sarah Grayson says motorists need to be more aware of motorcyclists on the roads.
Ride your own ride
She says motorcyclists should choose a bike to suit their capabilities and ride to their ability on the roads.
“Ride your own ride – don’t feel you have to keep up with everyone else,” Sgt Grayson says.
“It’s a great activity, as long as you do it safely.”
North Star Yamaha will host a coffee with a cop event on Tuesday, May 18 from 10am-1pm where police, motorcycle groups and learn to ride groups will meet motorcyclists to share advice about riding safely.
