Promising signs for Dolphins
The Dolphins’ Intrust Super Cup side will be looking for a win against Tweed Seagulls at Moreton Daily Stadium this weekend, after going down to Wynnum Manly in a tight tussle on Sunday.
Head Coach Adam Mogg said while it may appear the side has started slowing in their past two outings, it was not the case in his view.
“Two points would have been nice, but it was a massive jump forward for us. If we keep going in that direction, we’ll be OK,” Mogg said.
“We didn’t run out of time on Sunday, we ran out of a bit of execution.”
The side didn’t start strongly but Mogg said that was due to individuals missing tackles and opportunities.
“We started poorly (against Capras) as opposed to Wynnum, who I don’t think we started poorly against. We had to build our way back into the game and I’m really happy with the performance last weekend,” he explained
“It was the best standard of QCup games this year. Wynnum did a great job, there were 2000-3000 people there and it was a really entertaining game.”
The Dolphins went down to Wynnum Manly 34-28 on Sunday, after recovering from a 16-0 deficit before putting on 12 points before the half-time break.
The previous weekend, in their first home game for the season at Moreton Daily Stadium, The Dolphins came back from being 16-4 down at half-time to win 24-22, after a penalty goal to Hayze Perham in the 79th minute.
Mogg said the stadium and the atmosphere made the home side and their opposition lift.
“It’s always good to play at Moreton Daily Stadium. It’s a terrific stadium and a great venue. It’s always a pleasure to play there and it’s the same for opposition teams. They get excited about the occasion as well,” he said.
He said Trai Fuller’s try-saving tackle against the Capras would be up there for tackle of the season, but one by Reece Walsh against Wynnum was also a contender.
Mogg said the 18-year-old, who has signed with the Warriors, came from nowhere to make the tackle.
“We scored 28 points at the weekend, so we’re scoring points and have so much potential in our footy team,” he said.
“We just need to keep improving. We’ve used 31 players to-date, which is quite a lot. There are individuals that just need to improve and that will be our focus. I see lots of improvement in some of our players, but execution by some individuals was poor.”
The coaching team will work with them on individual skills work, reviewing video and applying personal accountability. “People know what to do and where to be … it’s just making sure we’re executing well when fatigued,” he said.
The Dolphins take on the Tweed Seagulls in round five at Moreton Daily Stadium on April 25 at 6pm. The Dolphins have won two of their first four games.
