Read anywhere with summer club
Residents are being invited to read “anywhere, anytime” at the City of Moreton Bay free Summer Reading Club, which has reopened.
The club, which runs until January 31, encourages participants to rediscover the joy of reading and boost literacy.
“This year we celebrate the freedom and adventure of reading anywhere,” Mayor Peter Flannery said.
“Last summer, more than 8500 kids and adults took part in the program, turning pages and sharing stories across the city.
“This year, Council is aiming to make the program even bigger.
“We know the ‘summer slide’ sees literacy levels drop by 20 per cent as kids take the long holiday break.
“It’s a simple, free and fun way to spend the summer holidays, boost literacy, and enjoy some quality screen-free time together."
Weekly prizes
Participants log their reading hours in-branch or online to go in the draw for weekly prizes such as book vouchers.
Every three hours of reading counts and includes novels, magazines, comics and audio books.
Readers can also support local schools by nominating them when signing up and helping schools compete for the Summer Reading Club trophy.
“Reading happens everywhere, not just in books,” Mayor Flannery said.
“Whether checking the new menu at your favourite café, reading local stories online or if you notice a new billboard around town.
“Every word you see adds to your adventure and your reading hours.”
