Shaping future of bayside suburb
A new campaign has been launched to build a stronger future for one of Moreton Bay’s neighbouring suburbs.
Sandgate Bayside Chamber of Commerce has unveiled a new vision for Sandgate’s CBD, as the community reaches a crossroad with population growth stalled.
Dubbed ‘Activate! Sandgate!’ the campaign has been unveiled as Brisbane City Council prepares consultation for its Suburban Renewal Precinct initiative
Activate! Sandgate! includes a significant enhancement of the Einbunpin Lagoon and parklands and a renewed mixed-use precinct while preserving the bayside streets and avenues.
Sandgate Bayside Chamber of Commerce President Bill Gollan said the campaign reflected a proactive, community-driven response to ensure Sandgate was well positioned for the future.
“Sandgate is one of Brisbane’s most naturally beautiful bayside locations, but without thoughtful future planning, we risk falling behind and losing the unique character that makes Sandgate so special,” Mr Gollan said.
“Activate! Sandgate! is about working with the community to deliver a balanced decision, one that protects our heritage, while creating new opportunities for locals to live, work and invest in the area.
“We know there is strong demand for more diverse housing options, better local employment opportunities and improved community facilities, and this campaign is about making sure those needs are clearly heard as part of the planning process.
“This is about making smart, considered decisions now so that the next generation of families, workers, downsizers and empty nesters can have solid housing options and continue to have a high quality of life.”
In response to Council, the Chamber has worked with planning and property experts to develop a vision of new housing, short-term accommodation, employment, retail and amenity.
“Without change our local economy will continue to be stagnant – we need a future-forward vision in place, and our campaign does exactly that,” Mr Gollan said.
“Central to the vision is also restoring Sandgate’s status as Brisbane’s go-to bayside suburb. Sandgate originated as a seaside escape and can still live up to that today.”
The campaign's immediate priority is building a broad base of community support before Council's consultation opens in mid-2026, giving residents a seat at the table before the agenda is set.
Sandgate Bayside Chamber of Commerce is a not-for-profit organisation covering Sandgate, Brighton, Shorncliffe, Bracken Ridge, Bald Hills, Boondall, Carseldine, Fitzgibbon and Taigum.
