Snakes sign former Test star

Caboolture Snakes have appointed a new coaching team for the 2026-27 cricket season - led by a former Test captain.

Suranga Lakmal, the former Sri Lankan fast bowler and country’s 16th Test captain, is now Head Coach at Caboolture Sports Cricket Club (CSCC).

Lakmal took 171 wickets in 70 Tests and 370 in his first-class career. He also played in 86 One Day Internationals (ODI) and 11 T20 internationals.

The 39-year-old replaces former Sheffield Shield-winning coach Terry Oliver who has stepped down after 10 years in the role.

Joining Lakmal as Assistant Head Coach is John “Flewy” Flew, a Caboolture cricket stalwart and former First Grade Premiership-winning captain.

“We believe we’ve found the right balance of new and old in our coaching ranks,” CSCC President Ben “Bear” Stuart said.

“Suranga’s international experience combined with Flewy’s deep club connection puts us in a strong position to continue building Caboolture into one of the most successful clubs in Queensland cricket."

“Terry has been an outstanding servant of this club over the last decade. He brought a level of professionalism and expertise that has helped shape where we are today."

“He leaves big shoes to fill and we thank him sincerely for everything he has given to Caboolture Cricket.”

Known for his discipline and leadership, Lakmal now lives in Brisbane and runs a cricket academy. When Caboolture advertised for a new head coach, he applied.

Lakmal will concentrate on Snakes’ top senior grades, Under 14 and Under 16 teams, but is keen to work with juniors. He may play some games, but coaching is his priority.

Flewy will assist Lakmal while co-ordinating Caboolture’s team in the Brisbane Metropolitan Under 17 competition and working with lower grades and the Under 12 team.

CSCC General Manager Daniel Rosolen said the club is looking to concentrate on development of players, male and female, from juniors to senior grades.

“It’s an incredibly exciting time for Caboolture Sports Cricket Club and cricket in the Moreton Bay region,” he said.

“To have someone of Suranga’s experience working within our community, particularly with our junior players, can only have a positive impact on development pathways and participation.”
