TOKYO OLYMPICS: Day 11 action and results

Day 11 Rolling Coverage

Three of our local Olympians are in action today We’ll have updates Kaylee McKeown’s bid for her second gold medal, as well as Cameron Smith’s third round in the golf and Renee Taylor’s fortunes with the Hockeyroos.

Golf - Cameron Smith

4pm: A third round 66 has lifted Cameron Smith to the fringes of the battle for gold, silver and bronze at the Olympics.

Smith, a former Pine Rivers State High School student, had a blemish-free round with five birdies and no dropped shots in the closing holes.

That included three successive birdies on the fifth, sixth and seventh holes as well as a nerveless putt for par on the 18th green.

Tournament leader Xander Schauffele, from the US, four shots ahead with five holes still to play. A further 10 players are between him and Smith.

The Wantima Country Club member will probably need to go lower still tomorrow to have a chance of medal.

Hockey - Renee Taylor

2.15pm: The Hockeyroos - with former Redcliffe Leagues Hockey Club junior Renee Taylor in their squad - have swept through Pool B at the Tokyo Olympics today.

Fourth quarter goals from Madison Fitzpatrick and Emily Chalker secured a hard-fought 2-0 victory over Argentina, who were in second place but now drop to third.

The Hockeyroos had to work hard in the opening quarter and Argentina were a constant threat in the afternoon heat with one deflected shot squeezing past the Australia post.

But Taylor - in her first Olympics - and the Aussies grew stronger as the match progressed and once in front were never seriously troubled.

Australia reach the quarter-finals with a maximum 15 points from five games, 13 goals scored and only one conceded.

They now wait to find out who they will play in Monday's quarters. The semi-finals are on Wednesday and bronze medal and gold medal games Friday.

Swimming - Kaylee McKeown

1pm: Kaylee McKeown has added an Olympic bronze medal to her two golds after helping the Australian Mixed 100m Medley Relay team finish third in today's final.

Just an hour after powering down the final 50m of the 200m Backstroke final to claim her second gold of the Tokyo Olympics, McKeon led the Aussie relay team in the first relay leg.

Racing against men and women - the teams comprise two of each - McKeown touched in fifth place. Emma McKeon anchored the team finishing a fraction short of the silver medal position.

Just 60 minutes earlier Redcliffe-born McKeown, who already had the 100m gold in her locker, was always in the top three of the 200m Backstroke final.

The 20-year-old hit the front with 25m to go and was never threatened.

McKeown finished in 2 minutes 04.08 seconds, her powerful finish proving too much for Canada's Kylie Masse in 2:05.42 with Australia's Emily Seebohm winning bronze.

This gold medal makes Tokyo the equal most successful Olympic Games for an Australian swimming team.
