Turning ideas into reality

Aspiring entrepreneurs will have the chance to connect with like-minded innovators when global franchise Techstars Startup Weekend descends on the Moreton Bay Region.

As part of the weekend, in June, individuals with big ideas will work together and hear from mentors, investors, and sponsors to found and build a business.

Mayor Peter Flannery says the inaugural Techstars Startup Weekend Moreton Bay will give participants an invaluable 54 hours, providing the framework and mentorship to transform an idea into reality, with team formation, user research, prototyping and pitching to investors.

“Participants are in for a whirlwind weekend, giving them unique insight into building a business in a fast-paced and fun weekend,” Mayor Flannery says.

“Aspiring entrepreneurs will get first-hand experience into the highs, lows, fun and pressure that make up life as a start-up, fittingly hosted at USC Moreton Bay, the hub of innovation and bright ideas for our region.”

Techstars Startup Weekend is a global organisation and network that helps entrepreneurs succeed, with 7000 events delivered in more than 150 countries, to 428,000 participants.

Pitch-perfect

Regional Innovation Co-ordinator Steve Butler is excited for participants to buckle up for the action-packed Techstars Startup Weekend.

“On Friday night, the individuals pitch their idea, and teams are formed around the favourite ideas,” Steve says.

“As a group, they have the rest of the weekend to work and create a business, before pitching it to a panel of local judges on Sunday.

“The weekend isn’t so much about prizes, or winning, rather it’s about the experience of being involved and having the inspiration and confidence to take that next step in your entrepreneurial journey.

“A number of Techstars Startup Weekends see groups create the companies in ‘real life’ and have gone on to have huge success”.

Steve says whether innovators are looking for feedback on an idea, a co-founder, specific skill set, or a team to help execute the idea, Techstars Startup Weekend is the perfect environment to test an idea and take steps towards launching a start-up.
