Upgrade tipped to fast-track waste disposal

A trip to the tip will be speedier thanks to a $6 million overhaul at the Dakabin Waste Facility.

Moreton Bay Regional Council this week awarded the $1 million contract for stage two of the project to AllenCon Pty Ltd to finish the facility’s upgrade.

Faster dumping

Mayor Peter Flannery says locals can expect to see new safety fencing, lighting, stormwater drainage, firefighting infrastructure, CCTV security, line marking and directional signs.

“We’re not only increasing the capacity of the Dakabin Waste Transfer Station, we’re redesigning it so that locals can get in and out as quickly as possible,” Mayor Flannery says.

“No one wants to spend their weekend waiting in a queue at the dump and businesses can’t afford to lose that valuable time either, certainly not right now.”

Clean and green

Mayor Flannery says the new transfer station and recycling facility reinforces Council’s commitment to greening the region.

“By building a new Waste Transfer Station and recycling facility we’ll be sending less recyclable material into landfill and ensuring the proper disposal of waste like soft plastic, small batteries, mobile phone, printer cartridges and more.”

Disposal doubles

Division 7 Councillor and Deputy Mayor Denise Sims says the redesigned waste facility will create more space to dispose of and recycle waste.

“It seems everyone’s been cleaning up at home or doing some DIY during COVID-19 because the amount of waste being taken to our tips has more than doubled this year compared to the same time last year,” Deputy Mayor Sims says.

“That’s why it’s so important for us to maximise the efficiency and lifespan of these important facilities.”

Stage two works are scheduled to start in early September and will take about 15 weeks to complete, weather depending.
