Upgrade to improve safety at intersection

Work will soon begin on the upgrade of the intersection of Elizabeth Ave, George St and Miller St at Kippa-Ring.

The State Government has finalised design for safety improvements with work expected to start in early May and due to be completed in about six months, weather and construction conditions permitting.

The intersection has a history of crashes and the upgrade involves installing traffic signals and signalised pedestrian crossings across George St, Miller St and the southern side of Elizabeth Ave.

It will also result in a modified intersection configuration and removal of the left-turn slip lane from George St to Elizabeth Ave to accommodate traffic signals and improve visibility.

Other key safety features include road resurfacing, new on-road bike lanes and green paint at conflict points for improved bike rider safety and upgraded LED street lighting.

This $9 million safety project is funded on a 50:50 basis, with the Federal and State Governments each committing $4.5 million as part of the $511.5 million Road Safety Program.

Member for Redcliffe Kerri-Anne Dooley says the State Government is committed to making local roads safer especially locations with a history of crashes.

“Elizabeth Avenue plays a critical role for local traffic moving north-south in the Kippa-Ring and Clontarf areas,” she says.

“We have listened to the community and this vital safety project will make a major difference for all road users who travel this section of Elizabeth Avenue.”

Minister for Transport and Main Roads Brent Mickelberg says: “A signalised intersection with signalised pedestrian crossings will ensure traffic, bike rider and pedestrian movements are more controlled, significantly reducing crash risk at this busy location.

“Modifications to the intersection layout, including the removal of the left-turn slip lane from George Street to Elizabeth Avenue, will provide the space required to accommodate traffic signals while also improving visibility for turning traffic.

“The Crisafulli Government is pleased to deliver this important project to improve safety for more than 32,000 vehicles utilising this section of Elizabeth Avenue daily.”
