"Bigger and better things" for Wilson

Moreton Bay boxer Liam Wilson has moved “one step closer” to a third world title shot after victory in Cairns last night.

Redcliffe-born Wilson, who trains at All Star Boxing Academy, Lawnton, Argentinian Ayrton Gimenez on points over 10 hard-fought rounds.

It keeps Wilson, who lives at Caboolture, in the frame for another shot at WBO Junior Lightweight champion Emanuel Navarette.

“That was the whole point of tonight,” Wilson, 29, said on Fox Sport, “hopefully I get one step closer to getting a rematch.

“That’s what I’ve been preparing for, that’s what tonight was for.”

George Rose, from promoter No Limit Boxing, agreed: "Now he's going to move on to bigger and better things."

Wilson won comfortably on all three judges’ cards (98-92, 97-93, 96-94), despite Gimenez’ confidence before the decision was announced.

“I won the fight fair and square," Wilson said, "it was hard for Mr Damage to come out tonight.

“The guy’s a good technical boxer and on his bike … that’s his style and he uses it very well. It was up to me to cut off the ring and box smart.

“It’s something new for me. Credit to him and his team. I definitely thought I won the fight.”

Wilson now waits as Navarette has to face Charly Suarez again, after their fight earlier this year was controversially stopped for an “accidental” cut.

If Navarette wins, No Limit Boxing – which has Wilson in its stable – says it would like to set-up a rematch in Australia.

Wilson floored Navarette in round four of their first fight. But the champion was given a 27-second count (rather than 10) after losing his mouthguard and recovered to win in round nine.

Vegas Larfield, who lives at Redcliffe and also trains with All Star Boxing, also had a points victory to claim the WBO International Super featherweight belt in Carins last night.

The 23-year-old featherweight took his record to 13 wins from 14 fights after beating Bryan Cabrillos, from the Philippines, over six rounds.

Judges scored it 58-55, 58-56 and 59-55 in Larfield’s favour and secure a fourth win in seven busy months and maintain his rise up the rankings.
