Boundary shift on cards for Petrie

Plans are being drawn up by Moreton Bay Regional Council to change the boundaries of two suburbs at new University of the Sunshine Coast (USC) site.

The Mill at Moreton Bay, which includes the USC campus, is currently in both Petrie and Kallangur, with Yebri Creek the dividing line.

Cr Mick Gillam (Div 8, which includes Petrie) has called for the Petrie boundary to be expanded to take in the entire USC site include the parts currently in Kallangur.

He believes the boundary should be changed so the MILLovate Project site is entirely known as being in Petrie.

What’s in a name?

“I’d like to look at renaming the Kallangur part to Petrie,” he says.

“Petrie is the recognised name for where the university is being established. It’s often called the Petrie site rather than the MILLovate site.

“We want to get both names known and I believe the MILLovate site should be in the one suburb boundary.”

Such a move would make Dohles Rocks Rd, Russell St and the railway line the boundaries of the university site.

There are parcels of privately-owned land around Russell St. The owners would be surveyed to see if they wanted to be part of Petrie or Kallangur.

“You’ll have people coming off the freeway looking for the Petrie site and the address won’t be Petrie, it could be in Kallangur,” says Cr Gillam.

“So rather than the confusion that could cause in the future, it’s my reasoning that we change it all to one suburb name.

“You do it now before there’s anyone who’s moved into the area.”

What happens now?

Councillors voted 12/1 in favour of the motion – only Cr Denise Sims (Div 7, which includes Kallangur) opposed it - and the Chief Executive Officer will now prepare a report on the possible boundary changes to be workshopped by Council.

A submission will then need to be made to the Queensland Place Names Authority if it meets the requirements of a boundary change and if Council decides to proceed.
