World Blood Donor Day in Moreton Bay

When Reece Crawford sat down for a routine whole blood donation on Boxing Day 2021, he was simply following a personal philosophy: "If you can, you should." He had no idea that in just two weeks, the very service he was supporting would be the only thing standing between his eight-year-old daughter, Charlotte, and a tragedy.

Ten minutes after Reece walked through his front door that afternoon, his world tilted. Charlotte collapsed with a life-threatening brain bleed. "I recognised it instantly when she dragged her left foot," Reece recalls.

"My mind was blown that an eight-year-old could be having a stroke."

During emergency surgery at Queensland Children’s Hospital, the situation turned critical when a blood vessel was nicked. To survive the operation, Charlotte required two bags of blood. For Reece, the irony was profound: "I was giving blood two weeks ago... today, my daughter wouldn't have lived without somebody's blood."

Reece’s story is a powerful reminder that the need for blood is constant and local. In 2026, Australia’s demand is at an all-time high, with over 1.7 million donations needed this year = that is 33,000 every week, or one every 18 seconds.

This "liquid gold" is used in 18 life-saving ways, including critical cancer and immune treatments.

The ‘1 in 130’ Elite

Today, Charlotte is a thriving 13-year-old, but Reece’s commitment has reached a national scale. Because of his rare antibody production, he was headhunted for the Anti-D Programme.

Reece is now one of only approximately 130 people in Australia whose plasma is used to create Anti-D injections—a mandatory lifeline for pregnant mothers with incompatible blood types. Without this tiny group of donors, many Australian babies would not survive. "Knowing my plasma helps a mum bring a healthy baby into the world—it’s just another way to pay it forward," Reece says.

As World Blood Donor Day approaches, Reece’s journey stands as a testament to community solidarity. Every fortnight in the Strathpine chair, he ensures the next father in a hospital waiting room doesn't have to wonder if the blood will be there. "Someone out there is our family's anonymous hero," Reece says. "If you can, please be that hero for someone else."
