Caboolture needs Meals on Wheels volunteers

Caboolture Meals on Wheels is looking for more volunteers to help prepare and deliver meals for clients.

Service manager Peter Malek says COVID-19 has hit the service hard, with a surge in clients and a dramatic fall in volunteers.

“I started managing the service about nine months ago, and we’ve had a 50 percent increase in business – it’s really grown by word of mouth,” Peter says.

“But the pandemic has made a big difference. We’ve lost about half our volunteers.”

Peter says suspension of the Work for the Dole scheme reduced kitchen staff from 10 to four, while delivery volunteers have fallen from 70 to 30.

“The only volunteers we have now are community people wanting to lend a hand.

“Our days are getting bigger and some of our volunteers are volunteering five days a week.”

Peter says volunteers enjoyed a feast of delectable cupcakes to mark National Meals on Wheels Day, thanks to State Member for Morayfield Mark Ryan.
