Call to tackle "blight on our community"

Owners of boats, caravans and trailers, who leave them parked on Moreton Bay’s public roads, have been put on notice.

The issue – described as a “blight on our community” – will be in the sights of Moreton Bay City Councillors after the March 16 Local Government Elections.

Cr Mick Gillam (Div 8), who is retiring after 30 years as a councillor, said “it needs addressing” during discussion about changes to Local Laws during his last full council meeting.

“I just we had taken one step further and tackled the problem we have with people parking their boats, caravans, trailers and other bits on our public roads,” he said.

“…and just leaving them for months, years on end, in some cases.

“It’s just a blight on our community and it needs addressing. I hope the next (Div 8) councillor addresses the matter.”

Cr Matt Constance (Div 10) replied: “I think a number of your colleagues would assure you they will be bringing that back very early next term to get the ball rolling.”

He said there were “challenges” around the “variation between different parts of the region and how you would deal with it”.

“Redcliffe Peninsula versus the Hills District versus more urbanised suburbs such as Albany Creek or North Lakes, we’ve got to work out a way of how to deal with it flexibly and on a suburb-by-suburb or almost street-by-street basis,” Cr Constance said.
