Gaffers are back on Moreton Bay

The Gaffers are returning to Moreton Bay this month for the Vintage Yacht Regatta, hosted by Queensland Cruising Yacht Club (QCYC).

A fleet of classic and vintage timber yachts will gather at QCYC’s Shorncliffe marina for the three-day regatta on July 17-19.

The event earned its nickname from the traditional gaff-rigged yachts that were once a common sight on Moreton Bay.

From restored classics to family cruisers, the regatta is open to boats designed or built more than 30 years ago and craft considered of a vintage design.

Eligible vessels not wishing to compete are welcome to participate as part of a display at the club or join the fleet on the water as spectators.

"The Vintage Yacht Regatta is about much more than racing,” QCYC Sailing Chair Jack Morrison said.

“It's an opportunity to bring together people who appreciate classic boats, traditional seamanship and the rich maritime history of Moreton Bay.

“Every boat has a story, and this event helps keep those stories alive for future generations."

Festivities begin on Friday July 17 with competitor arrivals, registration and a briefing at QCYC from 6.30pm. Racing is Saturday and Sunday, with two days of Around the Cans.

The public is invited to visit QCYC to watch the fleet prepare for racing, have breakfast, lunch or dinner overlooking the marina.

Saturday evening will feature the Vintage Yacht Regatta Dinner and Live Music, and the event concludes on Sunday afternoon with presentations.

The regatta is being sponsored by Husk Rum. QCYC also thanks Northside Marine for its in-kind support.

Those interested in taking part or wanting more about the event should visit this website, or email raceentries@qcyc.com.au.
