Community care at Redcliffe this Christmas

The Redcliffe Community Christmas Lunch is returning for the first time since 2019, bringing together volunteers, people in need and those looking for company on Christmas Day.
The event, which had a COVID-19 hiatus, is being organised with the support of Redcliffe Uniting Church, Moreton Bay Region Industry and Tourism, Social Ocean, Access Church and Moreton Bay City Council.
It will be held at Redcliffe Uniting Church, 1 Richens St, from noon on December 25. Those wishing to attend are being asked to register for catering purposes.
Senior Minister Paul Clark is expecting about 200 people to enjoy a two-course, cold Christmas lunch served with a warm heart, surrounded by community and friends.
There will be Christmas entertainment and carols, and an appearance by the big man in red who will have treats for children.
“We’re in touch with Santa’s people to see if he can make an appearance on the day,” Reverend Clark says.
“The event is open to anyone who is looking for community at Christmas. If you have nowhere else to go, come here.”
About 60-80 volunteers are needed to perform a variety of tasks including setting up, decorating, hosting tables, serving food and cleaning up. There are a number of shifts available.
The experience is just as special for those volunteering as it is for guests, as they relish the opportunity to share the day with others and make a difference in their community.
“The lines of who is attending for what reason become blurred. It’s about community and coming together,” Reverend Clark says.
“Part of the irony (of Christmas) is it’s all about community, but it can be a time when people feel most isolated.
“We’re trying to remember the true meaning of Christmas which is bringing people together.”
He says the event is more important than ever as people grapple with cost-of-living pressures and global unrest.
“What’s happening in the world makes people anxious. It’s not a time to be alone. It’s better to be together. We need to come together,” Reverend Clark says.
Guests of all abilities are welcome to the event, which is fully accessible, including individuals, families and groups or organisations.
