Distractions the focus for Road Safety Week

Emergency services will be out in force for the launch of Queensland Road Safety week at Rothwell on Sunday.

Acting Senior-Sergeant Sarah Grayson says the week focuses on safety on the roads and on water.

“This year’s theme is Eyes on the Road and it’s about removing distractions,” she says.

“Mobile phone distraction is one of the main things.”

To launch the week, emergency services will converge on Bunnings at Rothwell from 9am-noon on Sunday.

Sen-Sgt Grayson says firefighters will bring their kitchen fire trailer to show people how to put out common kitchen fires, ambulance officers will be showing people how to perform CPR, and the police dive squad, Moreton Bay Region SES units and the Coast Guard will also have displays.

“It’s all about safety on land or water and being prepared in the event of a disaster,” she says.

Plan ahead

Sen-Sgt Grayson says that in the wake of two serious crashes on the Bruce Highway in recent days Road Safety Week is a timely reminder for motorists to take care.

“You need to drive to the conditions and your ability.

“Now that COIVID restrictions have eased there’s a lot more people on the road travelling and more congestion, so it’s important to allow a bit of extra time for your journey – plan ahead and have a bit of courtesy and patience.

“You’re not going to get there any quicker by shouting out the window.”

Sen-Sgt Grayson says it’s also important to be mindful of vulnerable road users such as motorcyclists, pedestrians, cyclists.

As well as Sunday’s official launch, there will be a number of Road Safety Week activities around the region.

There’s Coffee with a Cop at Repco Morayfield on Tuesday morning and on Thursday morning at Bliss Café at Scarborough.
