Dugong delights at Redcliffe Jetty

A dawdling dugong delighted visitors and locals at Redcliffe Jetty yesterday, spending an extended period of time enjoying the attention and sheltered water close to shore.

Redcliffe Visitor Information Centre volunteer Steve Ferrier says the dugong was swimming in the area for about three hours from just after 8am.

“It didn’t spend much time above the water but was moving, under the jetty, from one side to the other,” he says.

“There was quite a volume of people walking out to the jetty to have a look.

“Word must have gotten around the shopping centre because more people came out to see it. They were walking from Redcliffe Pde and down to the jetty.”

Steve says there were up to 50 people watching the dugong, which appeared healthy and to be enjoying the clear water, at one stage.

There was no sign of the marine mammal, also known as a sea cow, today.
