Moreton Bay residents Ryan O’Shea and Travis Ryan-Toner have two things in common – both love golf and are apprentice electricians at Unitywater.

Ryan, a father of two from Caboolture South, decided six years behind a desk was enough when he applied for his mature-age apprenticeship.

Five are currently completing a Certificate III, over a four-year period with one month of each year for TAFE studies.

Ryan, who has been with the water utility for nine months, said after 10 years in office roles, it was time to change.

“It’s been a great way to continue using my brain and put my hands to use as well, and a bonus to be doing this in such a supportive environment,” Ryan said.

“When I’m not spending time with the kids, I love playing golf, which is 10 minutes down the road from the Unitywater workshop in Morayfield where we wrap up each day.”

Recent Year 12 Graduate from St Eugene College Burpengary, Travis, joined the water utility in November for a paid apprenticeship.

“I was uncertain about what to expect but have been surprised to find out how much goes into maintaining the water and wastewater in our area,”he said.

“My mentors have taught me a lot about the role electricians play within the water industry.

“It’s been incredible to see how much actually goes on behind the scenes. The early start and finish times have been a bonus, giving me the chance to squeeze in a round of golf in the afternoons!”

Trade apprenticeships are a career pathways at Unitywater, with programs for current students and recent university graduates.

Unitywater Executive Manager Strategic Engagement Joshua Zugajev said supporting the next generation of mechanical electricians, mechanical fitters, and other skilled tradespeople is vital as infrastructure grows.
