Elite cycling tour to crown champions in Moreton Bay hinterland

Elite cyclists from across Australia and overseas will race through the Moreton Bay region this weekend, with the Q Tour set to finish in the hinterland.

Running from March 20 to 22, the three-day event is the final round of the Hertz ProVelo Super League, Australia’s premier road cycling competition, with the overall champions to be decided in Sunday’s “Queen Stage”.

The tour begins at Lakeside Park in Moreton Bay before heading into Brisbane, then returns north for the final stage through the hinterland, where riders will take on the challenging climb towards Mount Mee.

The Mount Mee climb is expected to be the defining moment of the tour, testing riders’ strength and tactics as they compete for the final honours of the season.

Hertz ProVelo Super League co-founder Aaron Flanagan said the league had seen strong growth this season ahead of its finale in Moreton Bay.

“We’ve witnessed 30% uplift in team participation in this season, with racing hosted across five states, all coming to a fitting conclusion in the City of Moreton Bay this weekend,” he said.

“The league is really excited to conclude the season in such a great destination for cycling.”

A number of local riders will also be part of the action, including competitors from Balmoral Cycling Club, giving locals a chance to support homegrown talent.

Under-19 rider Chloe Moon said the event is a valuable opportunity for young cyclists.

“It’s such a great opportunity for the next generation of local riders to be inspired and get involved,” she said.

Women’s Cycling Development Initiative team manager Maddison Taylor said the event also highlights what makes the region special for riders.

“As locals, we regularly visit and train on these roads, so to be able to share them with the rest of the peloton is very special,” she said.

The final stage will also be broadcast nationally and internationally, putting the Moreton Bay hinterland in front of a wider audience and showcasing the region’s landscapes.

For locals, the event offers a chance to see elite-level cycling up close while the competition reaches its final and most decisive stage.
