Moreton Bay's 5-star "game changer"
Plans have been unveiled for a $250 million “game changer” which will give the Moreton Bay region its first greenfield 5-star hotel.
The Comiskey Group is aiming to transform its Sandstone Point Hotel and Holiday Resort, beside the Bribie Bridge, into “Queensland’s next premier tourism hub”.
This will include a new 202-room, 10-storey, 5-star hotel, constructed in two buildings, with a choice of one, two and three-bedroom suits.
There will be infinity pool over-looking Pumicestone Passage, swim-up bar, wellness centre, gym and spaces for weddings and social events.
A retail and entertainment precinct will have further dining options, indoor entertainment, bowling and a Tourism Information Centre.
Upgraded concert facilities, expanded basement car parking and a dedicated bus terminal will improve access for eventgoers.
Once complete, the development is expected to generate 995 jobs, attract more than 117,000 visitor nights and an estimated visitor spend of $143.3 million each year.
It comes as the City of Moreton Bay is preparing to meet growing demand ahead of and during the 2032 Brisbane Olympic Games.
Natassia Wheeler, CEO of Queensland Tourism Industry Council, says the development is “a game-changing investment”.
“With Brisbane 2032 just seven years away, infrastructure development has never been more critical,” she said.
“South East Queensland currently has only 46,000 hotel rooms, well behind Los Angeles with 120,000 and Paris with 133,000.
“Even with committed projects, we’re facing a significant shortfall.
"This development brings much-needed capacity, creates jobs, and enhances the tourism experience — which we know has a powerful ripple effect across the broader economy.”
Director Rob Comiskey says the expansion is a “natural evolution” for land his family has owned since 2011.
“From day one, we saw it as a truly special part of Moreton Bay - perfectly positioned opposite Bribie Island,” he said.
“We’ve drawn people in with live music, great dining, family-friendly facilities and the award-winning Sandstone Point Holiday Resort — now Australia’s most popular BIG4 holiday park.
“Over time, demand has only grown. To meet that and take the experience to the next level, we’re expanding and elevating our offering by delivering the first 5-star accommodation in Moreton Bay.
“It’s about building on what’s already here and making it even more compelling for locals and tourists.”
The Comiskey Group is in discussions with global brands to explore strategic partnerships that will strengthen its international appeal and long-term success.
Director Paul Comiskey, who has been building in the region since the 1970s, says: “We’ve been part of the Moreton Bay community for decades.
“My first project was a squash centre and gym in Strathpine back in 1974 — long before we moved into hotels and entertainment precincts.
“We’ve always been known for thinking big, but the Sandstone Point development is by far our most ambitious yet.”
The Comiskey Group is calling for expressions of interest from eco-tourism experiences that can leverage off this development.
“We believe this project is so substantial, it presents a real opportunity to strengthen Moreton Bay’s eco-tourism offering,” says Rob Comiskey.
“We’re seeking like-minded partners to help us elevate the experience further.”
