Giving tech-savvy students chance to shine

Bright sparks with big ideas are being given the chance to make their dreams a reality, with entries now open for the 2022 Mayor’s Telstra Innovation Awards.

In partnership with Telstra, the awards program is open to all Moreton Bay Region students in Years 9 to 12, with the aim of helping them learn, explore and develop their entrepreneurial spirit.

They will also be connected with industry mentors who can help develop their skills, and hone in on critical thinking vital for success in their chosen field.

Moreton Bay Regional Council Mayor Peter Flannery says the awards would ignite students’ imaginations - and give them the confidence to take the plunge into an exciting future.

“Big things are often sparked by what might seem like small ideas, and I’m so proud to help our local students shine through this awards program,” Mayor Flannery says.

“We want Moreton Bay’s young people to not only dream big, but to know that we believe in them, and want to help them achieve what they might think is impossible.

“A huge part of our Regional Economic Development Strategy for 2020-2041 are the pillars of Industry Advancement and Knowledge, Innovation and Entrepreneurship.

“We'll match the student teams with some of the region's most exciting entrepreneurs and leading industry experts, to ensure the teams learn all the skills needed to bring a grassroots business idea to life.”

The program aims to put the spotlight on the study of STEM subjects - Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics), all key to securing the future of Moreton Bay Region’s economy.

The judging panel is on the lookout for a new and creative use of technology, or a new technological idea such as a new app or social media concept, a design and engineering project, gaming tech or robotics.

How it works

The finalist teams will present their ideas in a three-minute ‘live pitch,’ where they will unveil their designs or prototypes to wow the panel.

There are more than $10,000 in prizes up for grabs, including prize packs for the first, second and third placing teams and their schools, school trophies for the top three placing teams, certificates for all finalist teams, and of course the Award for Emerging Entrepreneur of the Year.

Phase 1 entries close on March 31, with the finalist teams announced on April 21. Phase 2 of the competition then launches, with a series of mentoring sessions held across April and May. Phase 2 competition entries close on June 9, with the live pitch and Awards ceremony to be held on June 22 at 6pm.
