Green light for new cancer centre
Construction will start this month on a new cancer care facility in Caboolture, which is expected to receive its first patients in mid-2024.
Cancer Care Moreton Bay, on land between Central Lakes Shopping Centre and Caboolture Hospital, will provide a state-of-the-art cancer care.
It will have radiation oncology consulting and treatment, haematology and medical oncology consulting and treatment.
A dedicated oncology pharmacy, access to research and clinical trials and pathology services will also be included in the QM Properties development.
Cancer Care Associates Chief Executive Officer, Damien Williams said outer metropolitan suburbs and regional areas need access to high-quality and affordable cancer treatment.
“The region is experiencing significant population growth and this new cancer care centre is aimed at eliminating the need to travel to Brisbane with high-quality cancer service closer to home,” he said.
“Our radiation oncology treatment service will also provide access to bulk billing for people who have financial difficulties, ensuring patients can access potentially life-saving treatment, close to home with no out-of-pocket costs."
This project will generate $32.3 million in economic activity during construction and then a recurring annual economic impact of $2.4 million. It also supports 122 jobs, 19 of which will be ongoing.
Mayor Peter Flannery said Cancer Care Associates' advanced technologies, specialised care and treatment services are a welcome addition to Moreton Bay's healthcare sector.
"There is a need in our community for access to high quality and comprehensive cancer care services in Moreton Bay, so it's wonderful to see this initiative going ahead,” he said.
"This development will bring specialised roles to the area while allowing residents who require these services to continue to live and work in Moreton Bay.”
The Moreton Bay facility will be Cancer Care Associates' first facility in Queensland.
