How award-winner Therese loves "every minute" at work
Therese Thomson, our region’s top employee, loves “every minute” of her job and is more than happy to share the reasons why.
Ms Thomson has been an educator with Sesame Lane Care and Kindergarten, based at Kippa-Ring, for more than 20 years.
Six months ago, she was also named Employee of the Year at the 2021 Moreton Bay Region Business and Innovation Awards.

It was recognition of her tireless work as a mentor, role model and friend for children, their families and colleagues staff at Sesame Lane’s Clontarf centre.
'Really rewarding'
“I love every part of it because the children bring me joy,” said Ms Thomson, “if you sat with me at the front counter, you would see that every day.
“When I can see children that are engaged and happy and the relationship with the educators is healthy and is reciprocal, that lovely balance it has, is really rewarding.”
However, it does not happen by chance - acknowledging people and achievements is vital, so too having fun.
Everyday Ms Thomson sets out a “little list” of things she wants to achieve for the children, colleagues and families.
“Some are routine parts (of the day), others are different,” she said, “doing small, kind things has benefits for me and the other person.
“People often say what others are doing wrong, but sometimes forget to say what they are doing right. Focus on what is strong, not what’s wrong.
“Give praise where praise is due, recognise achievement, set little goals that I share with the team.
“This job is certainly busy and challenging, but the rewards and benefits are immeasurable.
Dreams come true
“I’ve often joked that you could probably put me in the sewerage works, but so long as the people around me are uplifting and affirming ....”
Ms Thomson has been part of the expansion of Sesame Lane Care and Kindergarten from two centres to 14.
“I’ve watched it grow,” she said, “I can definitely say teamwork, being respected, being acknowledged, has dividends.
“Your goals will not work unless you have owners who want to see your dreams come true.”
This year’s awards
The Moreton Bay Business and Innovation Awards are returning in 2022, with an earlier start date and additional categories for businesses and individuals to celebrate their achievements.
