Jet-skier cops hefty fine in Pumicestone Passage

A jet-ski rider was fined $400 for riding above the speed limit during a joint police, Maritime Safety Queensland and Queensland Boating and Fisheries Patrol operation off Bribie Island last week.

The three authorities joined forces in Pumicestone Passage on April 5 and 6, intercepting 86 vessels and issuing 10 marine infringement notices, seven fishing infringement notices and two traffic infringement notices.

Police say that overall, officers were pleased with the general compliance with the laws around safe boating.

But they say carrying the required safety equipment was the biggest issue, especially relating to lifejackets and out-of- date flares.

Costly fine

The team breath-tested 86 boaties, with no positive tests detected.

A jet-ski rider was issued with a Marine Infringement Notice for riding above the speed limit within 60m after police received a complaint about the driver’s conduct.

They allege the 48-year-old North Lakes man was spraying children he knew intentionally with his wash while the children were playing in the shallows.

His infringement notice came with a $400 fine.
