Library’s outdoor upgrade overdue

A refurbished outdoor area at Burpengary Library will pave the way for additional programs and create a more useful space for patrons.

Moreton Bay Regional Council awarded the $484,000 contract for the project to Kimini Constructions at its final meeting for 2021, with work scheduled to start in February.

As part of the project, the existing roof over the outdoor area will be replaced by a new weatherproof structure, air conditioning and ceiling fans will be installed and a new moveable wall will be built to separate meeting and children’s areas.

More than just books

Councillor Mark Booth (Div 2) says the upgrade will improve the current courtyard adjacent to the children’s area and support additional programs.

Libraries are no longer just somewhere to loan out books,” he says.

“They have got multiple uses in this day and age.”

Councillor Mick Gillam (Div 8) says that on a recent tour of the region’s libraries he found the Burpengary facility looking “a bit tired and definitely in need of some work”.

“Library use has increased of late…and will keep increasing with more development in the area.”

Construction is expected to be finished by September.
