Major development plan for Redcliffe
Plans have been revealed for a new 82-apartment development, pictured above, in the centre of Redcliffe providing homes for older people.
The seven-storey building would have 59 social and 23 affordable apartments, each with one bedroom and a multi-purpose room, for those over 55.
Brisbane Housing Company (BHC) has lodged a development application for the project at 99 Sutton St with Moreton Bay Regional Council.
If approved, construction would start next year creating 90 jobs during the 15-month build with the first residents moving in during 2024.
Downsizing
It is one of the first to be approved under the State Government’s Housing Investment Fund (HIF) and delivered through BHC and the Queensland Investment Corporation (QIC).
BHC Chief Executive Officer Rebecca Oelkers said the homes would be affordable for older people experiencing rental stress or looking to downsize from older public housing.
“We know older people, particularly women, often rent out of necessity rather than by choice,” Ms Oelkers said.
“Insecure private tenancies and an overinflated rental market is leaving this group of Australians vulnerable and at an increased risk of homelessness.
“Many older public housing tenants face limited options as their mobility changes and long-term home no longer meets their needs.

“As one of the foundation projects of the QIC BHC Consortium, 99 Sutton Street in Redcliffe will deliver on our vison of creating liveable communities, by providing stability and affordability for local older people.”

Ms Oelkers said the “community-centric, long-term housing”, designed by Arkhefield, will be close to amenities, have an open-air alfresco rooftop and ground floor common space.
The property is targeting a 7+ star NatHERS rating, there would be rainwater collection, storage for landscape irrigation and a solar power for communal space.
