Makeover for Albany Creek Community Centre
An overhaul of the Albany Creek Community Centre aims to improve accessibility and increase community use.
Brendale’s Kimini Constructions has been awarded the $500,000 contract to renovate the centre.
Councillor Cath Tonks (Div 9) says the upgrade comes in response to requests from the community and will encourage more people to use and hire the facility.
“We’re making some big changes, including the installation of a kitchenette to allow multiple user cooking and preparation access,” Cr Tonks says.
Responding to community
“This project has been guided by feedback from residents, the centre managers and local community groups that have used the facility in the past, to give the tired, cramped centre a much-needed makeover.
“I couldn’t be more excited by this announcement - I’m proud to be part of a Council that acts on the concerns of its residents and I want to recognise the efforts of those who advocated for this upgrade.”
Ten community groups hire weekly space at the centre, some of them with multiple bookings.
Activities at the centre include martial arts, dance, fitness and drama classes, yoga, educational groups and church, as well as a seniors’ group.
The centre is also hired for parties, weddings, functions, meetings and training sessions.
Local work
Mayor Peter Flannery says it is great to see Council’s new procurement policy helping more local companies get local work.
“Come Easter, we’ll be unveiling a new and improved Albany Creek Community Centre, with greater functionality, accessibility and appeal to encourage more people to use this new facility,” he says.
“This project is possible thanks to the State Government’s $210,000 contribution through their COVID Works for Queensland funding program, which is helping to accelerate projects across the region.
“We know that local businesses are more likely to hire subcontractors and employ locally within the region, and that’s going to be key to our post-pandemic recovery.
Supporting families
Pine Rivers MP Nikki Boyd says the State Government’s contribution is an investment into improving people’s day-to-day lives.
“Through the COVID Works for Queensland funding, we’re able to fast-track essential infrastructure upgrades, like the Albany Creek Community Centre, which is used and loved by many in the local community,” Ms Boyd says.
“While there’s no doubt Queenslanders are resilient, I know this project will create local jobs to support local families put dinner on the table each night.”
Construction starts this month and is expected to be completed by April.
