Mighty effort in Endeavour Foundation rally
A team from Samford is among 70 groups that have hit the road for this year’s Great Endeavour Rally.
They set off on Friday for an epic 4000km adventure to raise dust and much-needed funds for the Endeavour Foundation.
Samford’s David Crompton and mate Jamie Slade are behind team Mighty Boy – piloting a tiny vehicle with a big heart.
David says his red-hot 1987 Mighty Boy’s not much bigger than a ride-on lawn mower and was chosen because he wanted to tackle the rally “in the most impractical car” he thought would actually have a chance at completing it.
“Let’s just say our aim is to be mighty by name and nature,” David says.
At just over three metres long and 1.3metres high, “the mighty two-seater with tiny tray-back and no mod-cons” is helping the mates tick off a bucket list wish to visit some iconic Aussie sites and raise money for a great cause.
Epic adventure
“At the end of the day, I think it’ll make it. We’ve done work on the car, and we’re certainly going to have to travel light.
“Weighing just 500kg, I guess if we have any troubles, we could probably just pick it up.
“But in all seriousness, with such a strong support base provided by the Rally, we’re going to be fine and I can’t wait to see the sights and raise some good money for Endeavour Foundation.
“It’s a chance for an adventure, to really break away from the routine and the norm and a chance to raise money for a really good cause.”
Travelling from Roma to Cameron Corner – the junction of Queensland, South Australia and NSW, Tibooburra, Betoota, Birdsville, Big Red, and Innamincka, the Rally winds up in Longreach on September 1.
Here’s how to help
Endeavour Foundation event specialist Nathan Woolhouse says participants are driving on private station tracks, through National and State parks and along iconic public tracks.
“A great bonus this year, is the stop in Cameron Corner; a chance to stand in three states at one time and certainly an opportunity of a lifetime,” Nathan says.
He says the Rally has raised more than $13 million since it launched more than 35 years ago, helping the Endeavour Foundation support people with disability to live their best lives.
