Motorists warned: Fill up today

More than one third of fuel stations in the City of Moreton Bay were this morning selling regular unleaded for a record price - and it is not expected to fall for weeks.

The RACQ said at 8am, 34 per cent of fuel stops in ours region had hiked their price to $237.9cpl (cents per litre).

At the same time, 44 per cent of service stations in the same area were still charging less than $2 per litre.

But the forecast is for weeks of high prices and when they do fall, it is unlikely to be below current figures.

“OPEC’s decision to cut global production and a weaker Aussie dollar have led to increased wholesale prices and there’s no doubt fuel companies will pass this on to motorists in coming days,” an RACQ spokesperson said.

“We don’t expect prices to come back down to the cheap phase of the cycle again for around four to six weeks and if oil prices remain this high, the cheapest regular unleaded we will see then will be around $2 per litre.

“Our advice is to make sure you’re filling up today and buying from these cheaper stations before they also hike their prices.”

RACQ said at 1pm on Friday 76 per cent of service stations in Greater Brisbane were selling ULP for $2 or less.

Only four sites, or 1 per cent, had hiked it to $237.9 per litre – those included the BP servos on the Bruce Highway at Burpengary and Ampol in Burpengary.

RACQ said motorists filling an average 50-litre tank could save more than $20 by filling up at the cheaper sites compared to the most expensive sites.
